Freudian Theory in “Lord of the Flies” Essay

â€Å"The Lord of the Flies† by William Golding is a social experiment with a twist. It is executed by isolating young boys on a deserted island. They arrive on the island because their airplane was shot down while they were trying to escape a bombing in England. The boys are young so they have not been completely molded by society; therefore they have room to deviate quickly. The isolation removes the blinders of civilization and the true identity of the boys and human nature is revealed. If the reader uses a Freudian approach to reading the novel one will find that Golding’s characters and conflicts follow Freud’s theories of the id, ego, and superego, thus making them more understandable. Studying the Freudian theory allows one to see Jack as the id, Ralph as the ego, Piggy and Simon as the superego, and why they clash. The famous psychologist Sigmund Freud developed a theory that uses people’s personality traits to classify them into three different categories of id, ego, and superego. Although every person contains all three of the forces, one can dominates. â€Å"For Freud, we are simply actors in the drama of our minds, pushed by desire, pulled by conscience† (Understanding the Id, Ego, and Superego in Psychology). This theory allows one to realize that people tend to exhibit behaviors of their category. The id is the primal force of desires and needs. Impulse is controlled by the id. It can be compared to the devil on the shoulder of cartoon characters, and Mr. Hyde. Some people do not keep the id in check so it dominates their personality. Signs of the id are forceful speech, physical expression, and emotional outbursts. Negotiations with the id help it get what it wants without causing too much damage. It also tries to harness the power of the id to achieve things by regulating it. People that have ego personalities want to please everyone; they tell people what they want to hear. The superego is the moral judge and conscience. â€Å"While the ego negotiates with the id, trying to prevent another tantrum, the superego judges the performance† (Understanding the Id, Ego, and Superego in Psychology). Usually the superego’s morals and standards come from figures of authority or society. Most importantly the superego is not affected by impulse or others. Each of the characters in Lord of the Flies each embodies  a certain force which is why they can not work with each other. Jack is a boy who gets angry quickly, acts on his desires, has emotional outbursts, and enjoys hunting and killing, he obviously embodies the id. These traits are a result of the id not being kept in check inside of ones self. Blushing is a sign of Jack’s anger, which happens every time his pride is wounded; â€Å"Jack’s face disappeared under a blush of mortification† (Golding 23). Jack becomes angry so often because he does not censor his emotions. He always does whatever he feels like. The main things that Jack likes to do are hunt and kill. He is driven to do it and his â€Å"compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up† (47). This is very primal and the desire to kill shows his lack of conscience. Since he becomes obsessed with hunting he also has a bloodlust. Sometimes Jack burst out in emotion some times happiness; â€Å"He [Jack] began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling† (Golding 58), and sometimes anger; â€Å"I’m going up the mountain. The words came from Jack viciously, as thought they were a curse† (Golding 119). Jack bursts out because he wants to make it known that he will do whatever he wants, and no one will get in his way. The biggest conflict caused by Jack clashing with the other forces is his separation from the tribe and the creation of his own faction. Jack cannot coexist with the other boys because of his id state. He does not want to be governed so he leaves; â€Å"I’m not going to be part of Ralph’s lot─ I’m going off by myself† (Golding 127). He leaves because his id was under constant scrutiny by the ego and superego of the tribe, so he acted on an impulse. This causes conflict because he takes almost all of the boys with him. Later the same boys kill Simon and Piggy, and hunt down Ralph. Although the id can be beneficial, without the checks from the other forces nothing productive or any long term good can come from it. Ralph is the islands leader he seeks the approval of every one, he is highly influenced by the superegos, he is the only one who can reason with the id, and he can use the id to his advantage, therefore he can be classified as the ego. The ego is the only mediator between id and superego. Ralph strives for the approval of the other boys. He says things that will make them look up to him; â€Å"He’s [Ralph’s father] a commander in the navy. When he gets leave he’ll come and rescue us† (Golding 13). He says things like this because he thinks if he does the boys will like him more. Some things that Ralph wants to do come from the suggestions of the superego; â€Å"The first thing we ought to have made was shelters down there by the beach† (Golding 45). This influence from the superego becomes Ralph’s goal. This happens because he is ego; the id would not heed the suggestions of the superego. Ralph is the only one who can negotiate with Jack, who is the id. When Jack does not become chief, Ralph negotiates and gives him the consolation of having an army of hunters; â€Å"The choir belongs to you of course. They can be an army─ Or hunters─ They could be† (Golding 23). He is able to make sure that the id does not go wild or revolt by offering it other choices. Ralph uses Jack to help him keep a fire; â€Å"We’ve got to have special people for looking after the fire. Any day there could be a ship out there.† â€Å"Ralph I’ll split up the choir my hunters, that is into groups, and we’ll be responsible for keeping the fire going† (Golding 43). Ralph is using the ego’s influence on the id to accomplish a goal. The gradual breakdown of the tribal assemblies is caused by Ralph being the ego. He is not assertive enough as a leader an d is overly concerned with the influence of the superego. He is also worried about what people think of him and if he is making them happy. The ego kept order on the island longer than it would have lasted if it was not present. Simon and Piggy are the only boys that bring morals and the values of society to the island, they act as the superegos. Piggy often reminds the boys of the grownups and the rules of where they came from; â€Å"What’s grownups going to think?† (Golding 84). He does this because his superego cannot stand rules being broken. He constantly reproaches their behavior and tries to invoke rules. Simon displays more of a moral value; â€Å"Then, amid the roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight, Simon found for [the littluns] the fruit they could not reach†¦[and] passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands.† (Golding 51). He does what is thought of as good and right. He is superego but not in the way piggy is. Piggy’s superego conveys rules, Simon’s conveys morals. Piggy and Simon are both killed because they are superego. The id cannot tolerate the blocks of value set up by superego, so it seeks to destroy them. With the superegos out of the way the id has  more freedom to do what it pleases. The superego is vital for a functioning human or society, without it a breakdown will quickly begin to transpire. Golding’s characters clearly represent Freudian forces. Since each is a different force many conflicts arise. The conflicts would not necessarily have happened if the characters were not set into specific roles. This all makes sense because of the Freudian theory. Golding’s novel demonstrates that in order for civilization or a human to prosper there must be a balance of the Freudian forces. Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle

Kolb’s experimental learning model was developed in 1984. The theoretical perspective of the model was that different people showed difference in their development preferences towards different styles of learning. Like any other way, such people would develop different preference to other styles in their lives including leadership, management and negotiating. According to Kolb, a combination of four styles in the learning process determine the nature of the learning styles. Consequently, the legitimacy for learning to take place should be a compound of the four different processes. These styles are: – Firstly, active experimentation seeks to establish the basis of what could be new in the learning process. It seeks to use the combination of various methods aimed at driving towards the act of new knowledge. According to this process, learners should be professional models when left in determining the best criteria within a package of relevant learning materials. This process involves  Ã‚   discussion within small groups, solving of learning problems and getting feedback from peer members. Abstract conceptualization seeks to find and conceptualize the relationship between two or more things. This is achieved through analytic comparison between learning analogies, going to lectures and reading learning materials. Abstract conceptualization is promoted through comparative approaches in case studies, reflective thinking and theoretical reading. This could be through observation of journals, logs as well as brainstorming. From what a learner sees from the reflective observation, the trainer should then provide the most adequate interpretation to learner. Concrete experience is what the learner conceptualizes from real life learning experience through an interaction with the learning environment. It involves the use of fieldwork excursions, laboratory findings and physical observations. From what the learner gets from such concrete experience, he/she should then question about the most appropriate area with which such knowledge can be applied. The training methodology involves peer group feedback from learners with directions from their trainer. (Sherry, Lori, 2004) Kolb’s experimental learning theory is therefore a component of four stages /processes. The model is important in that it seeks towards understanding the different learning styles among different individual persons as well as giving a fundamental experimental cycle that helps in its implementation. It forms the benchmark principle in his learning theory where both concrete and immediate experience acts as the basic tool support of the learner’s reflections and observations. Accordingly, whatever reflection and observations that are distilled and assimilated help to provide abstract concepts that produce new action implication that could be taken through active testing. The final consequence of this chain network of activities is the development of rational experience that make fundamental of knowledge. (Carolyn, 1993) Kolb’s learning cycle is a representative process, which involves touching all learning bases through a spiral learning cycle. The cycle involves experiencing, thinking, reflecting and acting. Consequently, the results of concrete and immediate experiences would be reflections and observations. Such set of reflections undergo through a process of assimilation which is then passed through absorption and translation into specific abstract conceptions which have active implications. Such a person can thus involve in an active testing and experimentation of what he /she had got from the former process and thus creating new set of experiences. According to Kolb’s, the preference towards learning styles is diverse for different people. The influence towards a specific learning style is determined by the potentiality of various factors. Kolb’s adequately defined out the three specific stages of development. Elsewhere, the propensity towards the reconciliation within these stages and the integration with these learning styles has its growth and improvement through out the different development stages. Either, specializations is what comes during schooling period and experience towards adulthood. Here, the person develops special styles of learning whose influence is the state of socialization within an organization and the state of education. According to Kolb, the influence towards a particular learning style consists the implications of two state variables.   These include feeling and thinking towards concrete experience and abstract conceptualization. Elsewhere, there is   doing and watching towards active experimentation and reflective thinking. The importance held by knowing the nature of learning style by a particular person helps the trainer to give learning orientations according to such specific methods. Consequently, specific learning style would have positive response to specific stimulus needs. These active training options allied to the different learning styles include the diverging perspective, where the learners have different perspectives to look things. There is a high sensitivity towards learning objectives. Either, there consists assimilation which refers to styles that are concise in nature and which require logical approaches. Here, concepts and ideas make an important aspect. Moreover, converging process involve solving problems as well as applying their learning skills towards finding practical solutions. The accommodating style of learning is relied only in intuition than the use of logics. It involves the use of other person’s learning results in taking experimental and practical impacts. Phineas Gage Essay

Perhaps one of the most well known cases in cognitive psychology is that of Phineas Gage. A man who suffered from an injury to his prefrontal lobes thirty years before the field of Psychology even began (Moulin, 2006). However, psychologists’ continue to study his brain and the effects of his injury and its role in cognitive functions years later. Phineas Gage was a foreman at a railroad who suffered damage to his prefrontal lobes as a result of an accidental explosion in the year 1848. This explosion caused an iron bar about a meter long to be launched completely through Gage’s head and supposedly land about nine meters away. As a result of this accident Gage suffered severe brain damage to his prefrontal lobes, with the left side being almost completely destroyed (Moulin, 2006). There is not documentation of what Gage’s personality was like before the accident and few reports of the changes after the incident, many believed to be exaggerated. Two of the reports that do exist regarding Gage are written by John Martyn Harlow. Harlow was the physician who treated Gage and followed his case (â€Å"III. The Damage to Gage’s Skull and Brain†, 2002). Following his recovery of the accident there were no reports of apparent loss of interllectial function, yet his personality changed drastically. In fact Gage behaved so different that he while he went back to work for the railroad he never was given his job back as foreman (â€Å"II. The Sequelae of the accident, 1848-1868,† 2002). In fact, when asked his friends and acquaintances said he was â€Å"no longer Gage† (Moulin, 2006). Gage lived about eleven years after his accident before dying in 1860 which left people in the medical field curious about him and his condition (Moulin, 2006). In fact the changes in his behavior that were described was the first time that it was revealed that complex functions might be located in the brain. During the time and the immediate time after Gage lived there is not much medical documentation. Therefore it was years later when the exact parts of Gage’s brain that were damaged due to the iron bar were determined (â€Å"II. The sequelae of the accident, 1848-1868,† 2002). When Harlow learned of the passing of Gage, he sought out and received permission from his family to have the body exhumated in December of 1867 (â€Å"II. The sequelae of the accident, 1848-1868,† 2002). He did so in order to study the brain and learn from the injury of the skull and the result that the damages had on Gage’s personality. From the study he was able to determine that Gage suffered damage to three locations; the area under the zygomatic arch, the base of the skull where the iron rod had entered behind the eye, and at the top of the head where the iron rod emerged (â€Å"III. The damage to Gage’s Skull and Brain†, 2002). After studies of Gage’s skull where complete, psychologists’ have been able to take the measurements from the skull and use modern technology to determine the approximate location of the legion. Damage was caused to both the left and right prefrontal cortices in a pattern that caused a defect in rational decision making and the processing of emotion (Damasio, 1994). Studies that have been done since the case of Gage have determined that higher cognitive functions take place in the prefrontal lobes. Some of these functions include working memory, mental imagery, and willed actions that are associated with consciousness (Frith & Dolan, 1998). Psychologists’ have been able to learn from this famous case of Phineas Gage. A man who took no part in experiments and whose injuries were sustained thirty years before the start of Psychology. From this case it has been determined that cognitive functions that can become impaired by prefrontal brain damage are abilities like planning, reasoning, and problem solving. It has also been shown that frontal lobe damage can affect a person’s memory in a subtle manner. While there can be no apparent loss of intellectual function as a result of prefrontal brain lesions it is can still be tragic to the lives of those involved (Gerhand, 1999).

This is a misperception. Since the 1960s, the size of the federal bureaucracy has been very stable. By contrast, however, state and local bureaucracies have grown steadily since World War II, reflecting the increasing extent to which federal programs are administered by the states. Most Americans also feel that the federal bureaucracy is very wasteful. Whistle-blowers and reports of abuses fuel this perception of waste, which does sometimes occur. The late Senator William Proxmire of Wisconsin was famous for his Golden Fleece awards given to departments and individuals for wasteful spending he found in the bureaucracy. Senator Proxmires focus on spending abuses helped end many wasteful and unwise practices. Writing in the first decades of the twentieth century, the German sociologist Max Weber theorized on governments, institutions, and bureaucracies. Weber believed that bureaucracies function to implement the policies of elected government in a rational, efficient, non-partisan manner. He felt that workers in bureaucracies develop specific expertise and technical knowledge that could not be acquired in the relatively short tenure of elected or appointed policy makers. Bureaucracies tend to resist change because change uses resources and introduces unknown elements into the system. Currently all nurses have to be trained to a degree university level before they can practice as a fully qualified nurse. Opportunities for nurses have increased by large, with one training opportunity being through the internet although this method of training has to be approved by the NHS. On the other hand, years ago nurses only had to have a diploma or LPNS. Now days all nurses have to attend and complete continuing education courses to keep up to date with the new trends and information used in the current day. In addition to the higher and more advanced education, which nurses now have to have, there comes an increases scope of practice. The more popular piece of technology used every day by a nurse is a computer. Nurses use them every day as a way to document the care given to a patient. Although new technology is a good advantage for health care, it has its negatives, for example training the staff to use it costs a lot of money, but on the other hand, it can save lifes. Other important technology that is used every day that benefits a patient is, air mattresses as they help to prevent DVTs and assistance with IV insertion which has made things a lot simpler. All of the new high tech equipment being simplified is for user- friendliness, which means that the new methods are speeding things up. Comparing the vocabularies of â€Å"Idiot Nation† and â€Å"Learning to Read†, I came out with the result that, Moores had used relatively critical words and vigorous words to write the passage. The way he narrated was rather extreme, he used words such as †idiots† and â€Å"stupidity† to insult the educational system in U. S. A. His tone was rather extreme and furious. He had even bolded some of the words in order to exaggerate his tone. In the other hand, Malcolm had used his own experience as the root of writing. The passage is to me more persuasive, since he had his own perspective and angles. To certain extent, I agree with his assumption. According to some research I have found from the official website of United Nations[1](please refer to the reference on page 4), the United Nations was established in 1947. Since then, they have been discussing problems regarding human rights. From an article I have read, it had mentioned about â€Å"all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world†. This was the ultimate aim of the organization. So the establishment of United Nation was a leap of gaining human rights for the Africans. However, African American was a missing element. However, the establishment of United Nation did not support a permanent right for the African. Regarding a news[2](refer to the reference on page 4) in 2010, the equality of Africans was still a controversial problem, and had not been tackled. So what I could say is that, I am not sure whether the assumption Malcolm had made was right or not. 8. After reading the passage of Malcolm, I think he has discontent feelings towards the white men. Although his passage was titles â€Å"learning to read†, he had only spent a few paragraphs describing the progress of his learning, nevertheless almost half of the passage using historical examples to criticize the white men of using their power brainwashing the people. He thought the white men had taken away the human right of the black men. However, I think it was understandable for him to have these kinds of thoughts, since he had received a several unfair treatments from the white people when he was younger, so the white people gave him a bad impression initially. As he represented the NOI (Nation of Islam), he had to criticize the white people, in order to persuade and gain supports from the black races who were under a very bad condition. 9. I think in certain extent it’s possible to empower the students in the way Malcolm X’s self-education. Firstly, the situation of Malcolm is a very rare case. He was in prison for 7 years. That is probably the reason he can self- educate. He had so much time in the prison, no temptation and without connecting the world. He had much time copying words from the dictionary, while the students in the modern world had to face different kind of problems in daily life, they would not have time copying the dictionary every day. However, I think the students could use part of Malcolm’s method to educate themselves by squeezing out a little time and memorizing some of the vocabularies every day, but not using the method as extreme as Malcolm’s. 10. I think the overall message of the passage was not solely bringing out the effectiveness of reading books; instead Malcolm wanted also to bring out the problem of black races being suppressed by the white men. In the passage, Malcolm had pointed out the history was being â€Å"whitening†, which means the history was written by the white men. The examples he had raised up were all against the white races. That was the point I realized his passage was not purely like the topic â€Å"Learning to read†. CLOSING QUESTION 11. The book â€Å"Happiness† has inspired me the most. This book taught me the right attitude I should have towards life. It gave me so much positive energy. People used to be so happy and care-free when we were younger, however, when people were growing up, they started to have many unnecessary worries. This book urged me to reflect myself, and give me more motivation and wisdom to treat daily life problems. â€Å"Learning to read† gave me a brand new perspective. I am not person with critical thinking. When I was younger, I have studied the history of Europe, and I used to believe most of them. This passage reminded me that the history were all written by the white races, which means they could actually â€Å"create† history in the way which benefited them. I used to think history are what people in the past have written and could not be doubt, since no one could go back to the past and prove what had really happened. Nevertheless, now I think history could have a possibility of fakeness, and could not be completely believed. 12. Malcolm X to me was a very tough and smart person. I admired his attitude in the prison. Most of the people would have blamed themselves of getting in the jail and might have given their hopes after they went to the jail, however, Malcolm educated himself in the jail, even harder than the normal people. This kind of faith and spirit is very meritorious. He later even made great achievement on fighting for the right of the black race. However, when reading his passage, I could not completely agree his perspective, there might be biases. Since he himself is from the black race, and was the leader of the Nation of Islam, his words could be bias to the black race. He kept on criticizing the white men, which he had a quite extreme point of view, it was probably because some unfair treatments he had received in the past. Effective Speech Susan B. Anthony Speech 1873 Susan B. Anthony was born on February 15, 1820 and she was one of the many women in the nineteenth century to fight for women’s rights. She would travel all over the nation and create petitions for the right for women to vote and also slavery. She was an abolitionist, an educational reformer, a labor activist, and of course a women’s right campaigner. As brave as she was, she voted illegally in the presidential election of 1872 in Rochester, New York and arrested.They had fined her 100 dollars but did not imprison her, which she refused to pay. The next year, Susan presented a speech explaining and demanding that women had the right vote just as much as men did. She fought and petitioned for the thirteenth amendment which was to outlaw slavery. The court room was filled with politics, former presidents, women and men that supported her words.She stood alone at the Canandaigua Courthouse and gave her speech before her sentencing. She stood handcuffed but nothing stopped Susan B. Anthony from expressing her feelings towards the authorities that were trying to keep her from voting. Susan opened her speech by addressing it to each and every single person in the room. She did not mention only men or only women but stated, â€Å"Friends and fellow citizens†. Her main ideas that she was mainly focused on getting across were the constitution itself explained how we the people were to help establish a better and equal America.She did not understand why the constitution contradicted itself because later, women were still not allowed to vote. She also explained, if the government wouldn’t allow women to vo te, they were degrading us. â€Å"For any state to make sex a qualification that must ever result in the disfranchisement of one entire half of the people, is to pass a bill of attainder, or, an ex post facto law, and is therefore a violation of the supreme law of the land. By it the blessings of liberty are forever withheld from women and their female posterity† (Susan B.Anthony 1873). In this quote she strongly expresses her feelings and beliefs, if the government were to ever pass that law, liberty and equality were to be taken from women forever. She risked her life in some situations, was arrested for illegally voting knowing she couldn’t vote but did anyways for the sake of women. She has motivated me to want to be superior in a large company one day. The CEO of many companies are always men and very few women. Society has painted a picture out for us that make us think automatically that the CEO of a popular firm or chain is man instead of a woman.Also, America back in 2008 had the chance to vote a woman for president, Hilary Clinton, but we did not because we felt as if she wasn’t capable of running a country all on her own and America wasn’t ready for a woman president.
